Agroforestry Technical Working Group
The report, Agroforestry and Climate Outcomes: Literature Review and Technical Guidance, covers the seven main practice standards related to agroforestry: alley cropping, forest farming, hedgerow plantings, riparian forest buffers, silvopasture, tree and shrub establishment, and windbreak/shelterbelt establishment and renovation. The report synthesizes research on benefits and best practices associated with agroforestry.
In addition to developing practice-specific guidance, the working group undertook an analysis of how the three main models for predicting biomass carbon accumulation over time (USDA COMET Farm/Planner, USDA/USFS Forest Vegetation Simulator, and USDA/USFS iTree) compared to empirical datasets that quantify these same biomass carbon outcomes. This comparison provides a novel way to evaluate the performance of the most commonly used models in forestry systems applied to agroforestry systems. The results are included in the report.
